About 4,000 forest fellers work daily in the forest plantations of state forestry farms. In addition, the same works are carried out in agricultural, military, forestry farms and private companies. Thus, the number of people who professionally work with logging tools in Ukraine reaches more than 5 thousand people [1].
Their work is extremely dangerous: the statistics of accounting for industrial injuries show that, in percentage terms, forest fellers and their assistants are injured and die as often as miners: for every 450,000-500,000 cube. m of harvested wood or the same amount of mined coal accounts for one human life and an order of magnitude more serious injuries that make a person disabled [2]. According to the Ukrainian legislation (Order of 01.11.2004 N 241 of the State Committee of Ukraine for the Supervision of Labor Protection), the “Norms of free issuance of special clothing, special shoes and other personal protective equipment for employees of the electric power industry” are approved, and this means that the employer is obliged to provide his electricians for the operation of distribution networks (while working with chain saws) with pants to protect against chain saws [3].
The main reasons for this are falling under a fallen tree and a chain saw, the engine of which revs up to 13-14 thousand rpm. revolutions per minute [2].
LEGIO company has developed a set of clothing for employees of forestry enterprises, woodworking enterprises, green economy services, organizations that provide services for clearing power lines from planted trees and other organizations that work with chain saws, which will provide protection against injury to the worker’s legs when working with manual chain saws.
The danger is that during work, the chainsaw slides from the log onto the leg of the sawyer, cuts through the fabric of the pants and the skin, which leads to profuse blood loss, sometimes even to death.
All over the world, to solve this problem, pants/overalls are used to protect against chain saws.
The trousers are made of dust-resistant material to protect the legs from chainsaw cuts. The legs are protected completely in front and partially in the back in accordance with DSTU EN 381-5:2002.
And if the working chain accidentally touches the surface of the fabric, the cutting element instantly gets stuck in the fibers, stops, and the user remains safe. Dust-resistant material consists of polyester threads and special polyamide fibers.
Our suit fully complies with DSTU EN 381-5:2002 and, depending on the area of the protective cover, can be produced in three designs: A, B and C.
Designs A and B of protective leg guards are intended for use by fully trained and instructed professional loggers in normal logging operations.
*Design B is similar to design A, but the protective coating is increased by 50 mm on the inside of the left leg. Such an expansion is justified by the fact that the leg artery is located in this area. An accident with damage to an artery can lead to a fatal outcome due to blood loss.
Design C of the protective device for the legs is intended for users who have little experience with chain saws, or in exceptional situations (for example, when working on trees)
The suit consists of a jacket and half-overalls or trousers (it is also possible to order separately half-overalls or trousers).
Clothing has a number of constructive features:
1) The clothes have a special, very comfortable cut, modern design, light and comfortable to wear. The suit is intended for work in conditions of heavy pollution and increased mechanical loads, because a forest feller may need to make his way through thickets, repair tools, carry wood, and so on.
2) Numerous hidden ventilation holes, large-area mesh inserts in the lining (even in the pockets), as well as additional ventilation holes under the arms and the breathable lining of the pants guarantee optimal ventilation of the body even with a buttoned jacket and tightly buttoned pants. Evaporation of the body is discharged outside, heat does not accumulate under clothing. For the winter period, it is possible to equip with insulated fleece or insulation.
3) The large surface of the signal paint on the jacket and trousers will provide increased visibility of the roller in foggy weather, rain, snow or in the dark, as well as in poor visibility caused by the features of the area.
What is important to pay attention to:
! in case of damage to the protective material, the pants must be taken out of service and the employee must get new ones. The protective package of materials is not subject to repair and only the complete package can ensure the safety of the employee’s health.
! the necessary degree of protection depends on the speed of rotation of the chain on the chain saw. According to DSTU EN 381-5:2002, there are three classes of protection:
1 class of protection – 20 m/s
2nd class of protection – 24 m/s
3rd class of protection – 28 m/s
It is very important that the protection class of the pants is equal to or higher than the speed of rotation of the saw chain.
